The song emphasises Ne-yo's appreciation for a woman who has her own motivation and goals. He likes a woman who "pays her bills on time". The opening of the song has a similar instrumental to Janet Jackson's 'Luv' but I'm also hearing some 'Sexy Love' in there as well (his original sound). Moving into a more R&B-driven direction with the song, Miss Independent is in fact a nice track, which makes a pleasant change considering that a lot of his leaked stuff has been underwhelming (though I'll admit that the euro/pop sounding 'Closer' has now grown on me prior to it hitting no 1 in the UK recently).
